Emergence of BJJ
The “gentle art” was shot to fame in the early 90s when Royce Gracie, son of Gracie Jiu Jitsu grand-master, Helio Gracie, defeated several larger opponents from Karate, Kung Fu, Judo and Street fighting in the original “no-holds barred” UFC tournaments. What was amazing about this feat was that he managed this without landing a single blow, but rather, using leverage and positioning, he managed to take his opponents to the ground and submit them with locks and chokeholds. BJJ is now a staple in MMA and considered one of the most effective forms of self defence.
We are affiliated with and have direct lineage to Gracie Humaitá, the first and original Gracie Jiu Jitsu academy opened by Helio Gracie in Rio De Janeiro. Our coaches, collectively, have committed decades of their lives to the art to ensure that their students get the most practical, technical and enjoyable sessions in Australia.
Brazilian jiu Jitsu and Other Martial Arts
What sets BJJ from the rest of the jacket arts is the emphasis on ground grappling or “free rolling”, where students get to test their skills against one another in a controlled, safe environment in every session. Unlike traditional martial arts, the essence of Gracie Jiu Jitsu is ever changing and dynamic, with rigid traditions dictating little of modern Gracie Jiu Jitsu. VT1’s complete program of Gracie Jiu Jitsu focuses on 3 main elements; Self Defence, Sport Jiu Jitsu and Vale Tudo (MMA).
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is one of the most enjoyable and challenging sports that you’ll ever do. The learning curve is steep and a practitioner can become proficient in a relatively short amount of time. The workout to your core is unprecedented. You’ll see improvements in strength, endurance, balance and flexibility!
Whether you want to increase your general fitness, become a grappling whiz or want to try something fun and exciting, regardless of age, gender, shape or size, Gracie Jiu Jitsu is what you’ve been looking for!
